Fresh flowers might look elegant on cakes, but they’re not as safe or practical as they seem. At Cape to Cake, we want every cake to be both beautiful and safe to enjoy — which is why we don’t use fresh flowers in our designs.
🚫 The Risks of Fresh Flowers on Cakes
- Toxicity
Many flowers are poisonous if eaten, even in small amounts. Popular varieties like lilies, hydrangeas, and oleander can cause serious illness. - Pesticides & Chemicals
Flowers sold for decoration aren’t grown for food use. They’re often treated with pesticides and preservatives that are unsafe to come into contact with cake. - Cross-Contamination
Natural oils, sap, or pollen can seep into the icing or sponge, changing the taste or causing allergic reactions. - Food Safety Standards
As a professional bakery, we follow strict hygiene practices. Using untreated flowers doesn’t meet food safety standards. - Wilting & Appearance
Without water, flowers wilt quickly, especially on buttercream. Instead of staying picture-perfect, they can look messy and unappealing within hours.
🌸 Our Safer Alternatives
At Cape to Cake, we achieve the same floral beauty without the risks:
- Handcrafted fondant flowers – Edible, detailed, and timeless.
- Silk flowers – Elegant, reusable, and completely food-safe when applied properly.
These options give your cake a luxurious, floral look — while keeping every bite safe to enjoy.
When you see flowers on one of our cakes, rest assured they’re edible fondant or high-quality silk flowers, never fresh flowers.
