CAPE TO CAKE ยท CAKE BUYING GUIDE

How to Choose the Perfect Cake for Your Celebration

Choosing a cake gets much easier when you know what to consider. Start with your occasion, guest count, preferred style, flavour and how the cake needs to get to your event. This guide will help you work through each choice.

Five questions will narrow it down quickly.

You don't need to know cake terminology or arrive with the entire design figured out. Start with the basics and the right cake becomes much easier to choose.

01 What are you celebrating?

Birthday, wedding, anniversary, baby shower, graduation, corporate event or something else?

02 How many people?

Your guest count helps determine the appropriate cake size or whether a tiered cake makes sense.

03 What should it look like?

Elegant, playful, themed, minimalist, floral, vintage, dramatic or completely custom?

04 What do you want inside?

Choose a flavour and filling that suit the celebration and the people who will be enjoying it.

05 How will it get there?

Decide whether you will collect in Bellville or whether Cape to Cake should arrange delivery or venue setup.

01
FIRST DECISION

Match the cake to the occasion

Different celebrations call for different kinds of cakes. Starting with the occasion immediately narrows down your best options.

02
PORTIONS & GUESTS

Choose the right cake size

Guest count matters, but it isn't the only factor. How the cake will be served and what other desserts are available can make a big difference.

THINK ABOUT

Your guest count

Start with the approximate number of people who may actually eat cake rather than simply the total number invited.

  • Number of guests
  • Adults versus children
  • Whether cake is the main dessert
  • Whether other desserts or sweet treats are being served
  • Whether you would like leftovers
ALSO CONSIDER

How the cake will be cut

A generous dessert portion and a smaller event-style portion are not the same size.

Cake height, number of layers and the particular design also influence the amount of cake available.

Not sure? Tell us your guest count and whether the cake will be your main dessert. We can help you choose an appropriate size.
2

When should you consider a tiered cake?

Tiered cakes are useful for larger celebrations, but guest count is not the only reason to choose one. They can also create height and visual impact for weddings and statement events.

More complex tiered cakes may require additional structural support, transport or venue setup.

03
THE LOOK

Choose a cake style that feels like your event

You don't need to copy a photograph exactly. Think about the overall feeling you want the cake to create.

01

Buttercream

Beautiful for smooth finishes, textures, piping, florals, drips and modern celebration cakes.

02

Fondant

Ideal for a smooth structured finish, novelty cakes, sculpted decorations and detailed themed designs.

03

Lambeth & Vintage

Decorative piping, borders and ornate details for a romantic, retro or fashionable celebration look.

04

Fresh Flowers

An elegant option for weddings and sophisticated celebrations when suitable flowers are used.

05

Edible Prints

Excellent for photographs, character images, logos, branded treats and personalised themed cakes.

06

Statement Design

Strong colours, dramatic height, metallic accents and bold decoration when the cake is meant to be a focal point.

USING AN INSPIRATION PHOTO?

Use it as a direction, not a photocopy.

Cake decorating is handmade. Reference images are useful for showing us the style, colour palette and details you love, but reasonable differences in colour, placement, proportions and handmade decoration are normal.

04
COLOUR PALETTE

Pick colours that work with the celebration

Cake colours don't need to match every napkin and balloon exactly. A coordinated palette usually looks more polished than trying to force exact colour matches.

Venue & decor

Use colours already present in your flowers, stationery, table decor or party theme.

Outfit or invitation

A dress, invitation or event mood board is often a useful colour reference.

One hero colour

One strong colour paired with softer neutrals can create a more elegant result than using every theme colour.

Remember: Phone screens, computer monitors, lighting and food colourants all affect how colours appear. Exact digital colour matching cannot be guaranteed.
05
THE BEST PART

Choose the flavour you actually want to eat

Don't choose a flavour just because you think it is what people expect at a particular event. A beautiful cake should taste good to you too.

Crowd-friendly favourites

Vanilla Chocolate Red Velvet Lemon Lemon Poppy

Familiar flavours are a good option when you are serving a mixed group of guests and want something broadly appealing.

Something more distinctive

Depending on the cake or product, additional premium flavours and fillings may be available.

Premium flavour and filling upgrades are priced separately where applicable, so check the options shown on the product page when ordering.

KEEPING IT REALISTIC

Match the design to your budget

The price of a custom cake is determined by much more than the amount of cake inside the box.

01 Cake size

Larger cakes naturally require more ingredients, preparation and decorating time.

02 Design complexity

Detailed fondant work, handmade figures and elaborate finishes require additional labour.

03 Flavour & filling

Standard options may be included while premium flavours and fillings can carry an upgrade.

04 Decorations

Toppers, florals, chocolate, branded prints and other extras can affect the final price.

05 Structure

Tiered, tall and structurally complex cakes may require additional supports and preparation.

06 Delivery & setup

Distance, cake complexity and venue setup requirements may be quoted separately.

A GOOD WAY TO SAVE

Choose a pre-designed cake and customise the options.

If you already like one of our existing designs, ordering it through the website is usually simpler than commissioning an entirely new design. You can select the available size, flavour, filling and other options directly on the product page.

DON'T FORGET THE JOURNEY

Think about collection or delivery before choosing

A cake that looks perfect on a mood board still needs to reach the celebration safely.

โœ“

Customer Collection

Most standard cakes can be collected by arrangement from Cape to Cake in Bellville.

Use a suitable vehicle, place the cake on a flat surface and keep it cool during transport.

โ†’

Cape to Cake Delivery

Delivery can be arranged for qualifying orders and is priced according to distance and the requirements of the cake.

We currently manage deliveries through our own delivery arrangements.

โ—†

Venue Setup

Very tall, heavy or structurally complex cakes may need to be transported in separate tiers and assembled at the venue.

Where setup is required, this will be confirmed when the order is finalised.

09
TIMING

Don't leave the cake until the last minute

Production capacity is limited, especially for complicated custom cakes, wedding cakes and busy celebration dates.

BIRTHDAYS & CELEBRATIONS

Earlier is better

Order as early as you can once your date and basic requirements are known, particularly for detailed custom designs.

WEDDINGS

Aim for at least two months

Cape to Cake recommends finalising wedding cake orders at least two months before the wedding date, subject to availability.

Important: Asking about a date or receiving a quote does not reserve production space. Your booking is confirmed once Cape to Cake has accepted the order and the required payment has been received.
