Fresh Flowers on Cakes: What You Need to Know
Fresh flowers can look elegant and luxurious on cakes, but they need to be handled with care. At Cape to Cake, we want every cake to be both beautiful and safe to enjoy, which is why we are selective about when and how fresh flowers are used.
While we do not use just any fresh flowers in our designs, we may offer certain cakes with fresh flowers, either supplied by Cape to Cake, by the client, or by the clientโs florist. Fresh flowers are only used where suitable, and they must be placed in a way that helps reduce direct contact with the cake.
The Risks of Fresh Flowers on Cakes
Toxicity
Many flowers are not safe to eat, even in small amounts. Some popular varieties, such as lilies, hydrangeas, and oleander, can be harmful if they come into contact with food or are accidentally consumed.
Pesticides & Chemicals
Flowers sold for decoration are not always grown for food use. They may be treated with pesticides, preservatives, or chemicals that should not come into contact with cake.
Cross-Contamination
Natural oils, sap, pollen, or residue from fresh flowers can transfer onto buttercream, fondant, or sponge. This may affect the taste of the cake or cause reactions for sensitive guests.
Food Safety Standards
As a professional bakery, we follow careful hygiene practices. Fresh flowers must be selected, prepared, and placed responsibly to help maintain food safety.
Wilting & Appearance
Fresh flowers can wilt quickly, especially in warm weather or when placed on buttercream. This means they may not always stay picture-perfect for the full event.
When We Do Offer Fresh Flowers
Cape to Cake may offer fresh flower styling on selected cake designs, especially where flowers are used as a decorative finish rather than an edible element.
Fresh flowers may be:
Supplied by Cape to Cake for selected cake designs, depending on availability and suitability.
Supplied by the client or the clientโs florist, with Cape to Cake handling placement only.
When fresh flowers are used, we take care to place them as safely and neatly as possible. However, fresh flowers remain a decorative element and should be removed before serving the cake.
Our Safer Alternatives
For clients who want a floral look without the risks of fresh flowers, we also offer beautiful alternatives:
Handcrafted fondant flowers
Edible, detailed, and timeless. These are a lovely option for elegant cakes and keepsake-style designs.
Wafer paper flowers
Lightweight, delicate, and perfect for soft luxury cake designs.
Silk flowers

These options allow us to create the same romantic floral effect while keeping the cake practical, beautiful, and safe to enjoy.
